1973 was the year when...

  • The United States ended its involvement in the Vietnam War after the signing of the Paris Peace Agreement.
  • OPEC oil increased by 200%, and Oil embargoes were put into place. Petrol was rationed in the UK.
  • The "Cod War" between the UK and Iceland takes place, with minor skirmishes over disputed waters, involving trawlers and occasionally Royal Navy ships.
  • A Three-Day Week was put in place in the UK by Edward Heath, the Prime Minister and leader of the Conservative Government. Energy blackouts and widespread industrial disruption took place.
  • Sydney Opera House was opened.

Goodbye Yellow Brick Road was one of Elton Johns most lauded albums.

Pin Ups was David Bowie's second album release of the year.

Although three years after they split, 1973 was another  big year for The Beatles - as a group and as solo artists. The two compilation albums,  The Beatles (Red Album) 62-66 and The Beatles (Blue Album) 67-70 were international best-sellers. And their individual projects were also flying high in the album charts, and receiving critical acclaim; Mind Games by John Lennon was his follow-up to Imagine; Red Rose Speedway by Paul McCartney's WIngs was one of two successful albums that year for the group (as well as Band on the Run, of course).  Ringo featured all the ex-beatles variously, alongside the drummer and singer, and George Harrison released his masterpiece, Living in the Material World.
